Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the size, shape, and overall appearance of the breasts. This procedure can be performed either with implants or by using the patient’s own fat tissue. It is often chosen by individuals looking to restore breast volume lost after pregnancy, achieve better symmetry, or simply enhance their natural shape.
The surgery typically takes between one to one and a half hours and is performed under general anesthesia. For individuals with sagging breasts, augmentation can also be combined with a breast lift (mastopexy) for a more youthful appearance.
Methods of Breast Augmentation
There are two primary methods used in breast augmentation:
1. Breast Implants
Breast implants are the most common method for breast enlargement. There are two types of implants:
- Saline Implants – These implants have a silicone shell filled with sterile saline (saltwater). Some are pre-filled, while others are filled during the surgery.
- Silicone Gel Implants – These implants contain a cohesive silicone gel that mimics the feel of natural breast tissue.
Both types come in various sizes and can have smooth or textured surfaces. The choice between saline and silicone is based on personal preference and physician recommendations.
2. Fat Injection Method
The fat injection technique is an alternative to implants, involving the transfer of the patient’s own fat to enhance breast volume. Fat is harvested from areas like the abdomen or thighs, purified, and then injected into the breasts. This method offers a natural look and feel, but may not provide the same volume as implants. It is ideal for individuals looking for subtle enhancements.
Before the Surgery
Preparation for breast augmentation involves several important steps. Patients are advised to cease taking aspirin, herbal supplements, and blood thinners at least 8 days before surgery. Smoking should be stopped two weeks prior to improve healing. Additionally, patients should undergo mammography or ultrasound to assess breast health before the procedure.
After the Surgery
Following breast augmentation, patients will have their breasts covered with gauze, and drainage tubes may be inserted temporarily. Wearing a surgical bra is essential to support the healing process. For the first six weeks, patients should avoid strenuous activities and refrain from lifting heavy objects. Pain management is typically handled with prescribed medications, and swelling will subside over time.
