Reshape, Refine, Radiate: Rhinoplasty for Exquisite Elegance!

What is Rhinoplasty?

In this aesthetic operation, the bones and cartilages of the nose are shaped to improve the appearance of the nose. This is done as part of a surgical process known as rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty, commonly known as nose job, is one of the most popular operations in plastic surgery. Nasal anomalies, whether inherited, developed throughout life, or as a result of an injury, can be corrected with the surgical treatment called rhinoplasty. If a deformity is causing the patient pain, it should be corrected, even if it is only in the capacity to breathe, even if it is visible to the naked eye. Whether for aesthetic or practical reasons, the primary purpose of rhinoplasty is to correct or improve airflow through the nose.

Rhinoplasty Methods

Rhinoplasty also known as nose aesthetics are performed with various operations. Since rhinoplasty applications are surgical operations, they are operations performed under general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty nose surgery is performed with anesthesia, but this may vary depending on the patient's problem in the nose area. If a very minor intervention is required in the nasal area, rhinoplasty can be performed by applying local anesthesia. Before rhinoplasty surgery, our skin type is examined to fully understand what your problem is, and the specialist doctor determines the path to be followed. Rhinoplasty surgery takes an average of two hours, but because of the pre-operative preparations and a one-day hospitalization after the operation, the operation takes one day.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty is a procedure that requires many years of experience and dexterity, since the entire operation is performed in a narrow tunnel. In closed rhinoplasty, the nose is first photographed from eight different angles. After the evaluation of our doctor with the photographs obtained, your aesthetic wishes are listened to, and the operation is decided.

With closed rhinoplasty, the tip of the nose can be lifted, the bridge of the nose can be intervened or the asymmetries of the nostrils can be changed, but the structure of the nasal bones remains unchanged after the operation. In closed rhinoplasty, special tools are used for nasal bumps on the nose instead of any chisel or surgical hammer. The right and left sides of the septum are cut longitudinally, and two horizontal incisions are made on the upper part of the nose. The upper parts of the nostrils are also separated by a longitudinal incision. The previously removed bone grafts are then placed in the cuts on the septum. The horizontal graft is fixed with a few stitches to fit the nose shape. Narrow silicone wings are then placed inside the nose to fix the appearance of the nose.

In closed rhinoplasty, unlike open rhinoplasty, bruising and edema are much less in the healing phase. But because of it is performed without the use of any chisels or surgical hammers, there is no scar after the operation. We successfully apply closed rhinoplasty operations with our advanced technology methods and international experience. Thanks to our guest-oriented approach and advanced diagnosis and treatment methods, we ensure that our patients leave our clinic healthy and happy.

Open Rhinoplasty

Unlike closed rhinoplasty, the open or external rhinoplasty approach uses a small bridging incision called a trans-columellar incision to connect the right and left nostril incisions. In exchange for this 4-5 mm visible section, the nose skin can be folded upwards (similar to opening a car hood) and unobstructed visibility of the lower nose skeleton can be achieved. In addition to direct visibility of nearly the entire nasal framework, distortion of the nasal cartilage is minimized and individual components can be evaluated in their natural, intact alignment. Therefore, the hallmark of open rhinoplasty is the greatly improved surgical access allowed by the transcolumellar incision.

Although many aspects of an unattractive nose can be corrected using a closed rhinoplasty approach (thereby avoiding a trans-columellar incision), the modest risk of a visible columellar scar is well balanced by improved accuracy, versatility and effectiveness. While some rhinoplasty surgeons remain adept at the closed technique, especially in patients with relatively simple nasal anatomy, the advent of open rhinoplasty has truly revolutionized the treatment of complex nasal deformities such as cleft lip rhinoplasty or severe post-rhinoplasty deformities.

In fact, most rhinoplasty specialists consider open rhinoplasty surgery to be the procedure of choice for all types of difficult nasal anatomy. However, the technical demands of open rhinoplasty are rigorous and significant dedication and commitment to this approach is required to consistently achieve superior results.

Piezo Rhinoplasty

Nasal aesthetic operations, in which the nasal bones are cut and filed with tiny saws that produce ultrasonic vibrations and have tissue selection feature, are called "Piezo Rhinoplasty" for short. Technological developments and the fact that patients are now more informed about rhinoplasty increase the demands for rhinoplasty with Piezo surgery. As a matter of fact, the definitions made as “best”, “most successful” or “gold standard” for the techniques used in rhinoplasty operations, including Piezo surgery, do not reflect the truth, since all the techniques used in rhinoplasty operations are determined according to the needs of the patients, nose and skin structures. Piezo surgery can be preferred in both open and closed rhinoplasty operations. From this point of view, it is possible to conclude that tiny saw heads working with ultrasonic vibrations are only one of the surgical instruments used in rhinoplasty surgeries.

Thanks to Piezo surgery, which is sensitive only to hard tissues such as bone, which provides very successful results when applied to selected patients; Since the vibration strength can be adjusted according to the bone density, the bones can be cut and shaped very precisely. Therefore, the Piezo technique offers high safety and success in patients with thin bones. Since the vessels, tissues, cartilage, nerves or muscles surrounding the bones are not intervened, the comfort of the patients increases in the post-operative period. The nasal septum can be worked more precisely and the healing process of the patients is shortened as the soft tissues are not damaged. Since the area to be treated is opened, it is possible for surgeons to see the area more easily and it is possible to create a safe surgical area. Accordingly, complaints such as bruising and bleeding are minimized. Both minimal and major structural changes can be made in the nose.

Piezo surgery can be applied to patients who are not satisfied with the shape of their nose, who have nasal congestion problems in addition to their nose shape problems, and whose general health condition is not a problem for the surgery. The surgeons, make the decision for piezo surgery by considering the nose structure of the patients, the skin structure and the procedures to be performed during the operation. We also consider the preferences of the patients in line with our experience. In this process, surgeons take into account the expectations, demands and preferences of the patients.

Diamond Rhinoplasty

Diamond rhinoplasty is an operation performed with sound waves, using a method with a diamond on the tip of the device, to change the deformities or unwanted posture of the nose without the need for a surgical operation. Since there will be no surgical incision, there will be no scars on the nose after the operation.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Nose aesthetics may vary according to the individual, as well as depending on the nationality of the person. One of the best examples of this, Ethnic rhinoplasty; It is a specialized rhinoplasty technique performed for individuals with different nose characteristics such as Caucasian, African, Middle Eastern, African-American, Asian, Latin. In order to be able to apply these special rhinoplasty techniques, it is very important for the physician to have a good knowledge of ethnic faces, as well as experience and expertise in ethnic rhinoplasty. Before the rhinoplasty surgery, the patient with ethnic origins is analyzed and the new nose ratios are determined in order to have the most suitable and natural-looking nose. Unlike classical rhinoplasty, the factor of ethnic origins should also be taken into account in face-nose harmony and the new state of the nose should be determined accordingly. Similar nose features are seen in people of the same ethnicity.

Considering that facial anatomical features vary among people from different ethnic origins, surgical planning should be tailored to each ethnicity. Every ethnicity has differences in terms of nose skin and structure. Well-planned techniques for the Caucasian nose may not be suitable for the nose of a Middle Eastern, African American, Latino or Asian patient. IAs a result, it would not be wrong to say that the more the nose contains the details that exist in its nature, the more natural it is. In ethnic rhinoplasty, the application of closed techniques that minimize tissue damage, thus protecting the anatomical structures of the nose in the most efficient way, provides much more successful and natural results.

Septoplasty

Nose surgeries are the first aesthetic operations that come to mind, but septoplasty, which is also called functional rhinoplasty, which improves the quality of the life of the patients by improving all functions of the nose, is at least as popular as nasal aesthetic procedures. In septoplasty procedure, an operation related to the external appearance of the nose is not performed. Septoplasty is performed to eliminate cartilage and bone curvature problems that cause breathing problems in the nose. The purpose of this surgery is not to create or provide a natural and beautiful nose to the patient aesthetically, but to ensure that the patients breathe in a healthy way. It can be done with the chronic sinusitis and sleep apnea operation.

Septoplasty is applied in the situation as follows:

  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Chronic nasal congestion
  • Recurrent sinusitis infections
  • Uncontrollable nosebleeds
  • Nasal perforation (hole)
  • Chronic headache
  • Sleep apnea
  • Persistent postnasal drip
  • Intranasal polyps

Although Septoplasty can be performed with local anesthesia in some cases such as heart failure and hypertension, septoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. The operation time is about an hour. Usually, an invisible incision is made in the nostril, reaching the septum under the mucosa, and bone and cartilage are reshaped, thus correcting the curvature. If necessary, rasping or complete removal can be done. When the correction process is finished, the operation is terminated by placing a buffer (silicone or self-melting) suture in the nasal cavity.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Side effects/complications seen in the patient after the first rhinoplasty, damage and deformations in the nose, tissues, and face area, the appearance of the patient different from the planned due to incorrect application, the patient's dissatisfaction with the new appearance the most important factors in deciding for revision rhinoplasty. However, in order to perform a healthy and risk-free revision rhinoplasty, it is recommended that 6 to 12 months have passed since the first rhinoplasty, depending on the patient's condition.

As in every surgery, unexpected situations can occur after the first rhinoplasty that will cause the operation to be defined as unsuccessful. After rhinoplasty;

  • Experiencing nasal congestion,
  • Narrowing of the air channels of the nose as a result of excessive removal of the lateral cartilages of the nose, collapse of the side walls while breathing, problems in breathing, closure of the nasal roof during deep breathing or inability to send enough air to the lungs,
  • Continuation of the ugly appearance as a result of insufficient removal of the arch in the nasal dorsal bone or excessive filing / carving,
  • Nasal dorsal bone and cartilage structure collapses,
  • Inability to correct the curvature of the nose after rhinoplasty (deviation - twisted nose),
  • Failure to correct the nasal tip drooping or the occurrence of drooping nasal tip after rhinoplasty,
  • Opening and pit formation in the nasal dorsal bone as a result of the incomplete fracture of the nasal bones from the sides,
  • Asymmetrically excessively small or excessively large nostrils,
  • Lifting the tip of the nose more than necessary after the intervention
  • Excessive scarring or skin and soft tissue problems in the inner or outer region of the nose,
  • It can be seen that the new size of the nose is disproportionate to the face and asymmetry occurs.

To eliminate these problems, revision rhinoplasty is applied.

Rhinoplasty for Men

One of the most important reasons for the need for male rhinoplasty surgery is that men experience nasal breathing difficulties than women. Experienced nasal traumas can disrupt respiratory function as well as the external appearance of the nose, and both functional and aesthetic corrections should be made together in its treatment. The features for men in this operation must be:

  • The ideal nose shape in men should reflect a personality with high self-confidence, strong and leadership characteristics in general.
  • A curved and highly arched nose is not aesthetically pleasing, it can also give a more anti-social and criminal-inclined impression.
  • Not all men's faces are the same, and a single nose type will not be ideal for every male face.
  • The nose should be harmonious and natural with other elements of the face such as the forehead, cheekbones, lower jaw corners and chin tip.
  • Sometimes a nose with very perfect lines, as if drawn with a pencil, can disrupt the naturalness of the male face and attract attention in a negative way.
  • An aesthetically ideal nose should not spoil the masculine character of the face.
  • A small and curved nose in women gives the face a more feminine character, while in men the nose should not be reduced too much and the nasal lines and transitions should be sharper.
  • The nasal ridge is straight or slightly arched in profile, giving the face a more masculine appearance.
  • The nose-lip angle should be around 90 degrees, the nose should not be as upturned as in women.

The nasal breathing function must be corrected together with the aesthetic appearance.

Before Rhinoplasty Operation

Before the rhinoplasty surgery, a detailed physical examination is performed after listening to the patient's wishes and complaints during the interview with the patient. In this examination, the patient's nose is evaluated both in terms of aesthetics and in terms of breathing problems. Because breathing problems can be corrected by plastic surgeons in the same surgery. A detailed facial analysis is performed by taking pictures of the patient in terms of aesthetics, and the nose that will go to the face is determined. Before the rhinoplasty, a simulation study is applied to make the most suitable nose shape for the patient's face. When you take the day for your surgery, what you did or didn’t are very important. You need to have detailed information about what to pay attention to. Otherwise, your surgery may be canceled or postponed. Before the Rhinoplasty operation, you should pay attention to the precautions as follows:

  • As in all surgeries, it is necessary to stop aspirin 3 weeks before the surgery. In the last 1 week, medications and similar substances that can dilute the blood should be avoided.
  • Painkillers, and multivitamin pills containing substances such as ginseng, ginko, and co-enzyme Q should not be used before rhinoplasty.
  • Green tea, flax seeds, cherry stalk, and tomato seed herbal products should not be used.
  • For women, do not make your surgery coincide with your menstrual period
  • Before coming to the surgery, you must perform your nose cleaning. Piercings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. must be removed before the surgery.
  • At least six months before the procedure, the patient should stop smoking.
  • Alcohol consumption should be stopped 10 days before the operation.
  • You must be in the hospital at least 2 hours before the surgery. Since we prefer general anesthesia in rhinoplasty surgery, 8 hours before the surgery patients must not eat or drink anything.
  • Make-up should not be applied.
  • There should be no panic or fuss before the operation.
  • Before the operation, the patient is given a sedative, popularly known as an injection of courage, to suppress the anxiety.
  • You need to protect yourself from diseases such as flu, cold, infection, etc. a little more than normal. Being sick a few days before the operation means that your operation will be canceled.

After Rhinoplasty Operation

Contrary to the general belief, rhinoplasty operations do not cause very painful and difficult post-operative periods. Of course, there will be some pain. The pain, which may vary according to the age of the person, the techniques used in the surgery, and the interventions made to the patient's bone and cartilage structure, usually alleviates significantly within 72 hours. Early pain can be managed with painkillers.

After rhinoplasty operations, edema and bruising usually go away within 10-15 days, and patients can clearly notice the change in the shape of their noses. However, it may take up to 12 months for the edema to completely disappear and the nose to take its final shape. During this period, edema gradually decreases over time and is usually only noticeable by surgeons.

When it comes to scars, it is usually one of the most concerned issues whether there will be any scars after rhinoplasty. Since no incision is made on the nasal skin during closed rhinoplasty and all interventions are performed through the nostrils, patients do not experience scar problems. In the open technique, scar formation occurs because the "columella" between the nostrils is cut. Although it is obvious at the beginning, this scar fades away during the healing process and there is no aesthetic problem.

Sometimes the patient would not be happy about the final results and this may pave the way to the revision rhinoplasty. In order to avoid the need for revision after rhinoplasty, surgeons evaluate all the variables before the operation. However, factors such as the patient's skin structure, age, genetic diseases, bone structure, and whether it complies with what needs to be considered during the recovery process may reveal the need for revision. Like any surgery, it cannot be guaranteed that complications will not occur after rhinoplasty. Revision rhinoplasty may be required even after rhinoplasty operations performed by the most experienced, successful and skilled surgeons.

In the first week after rhinoplasty, one should lie down with the head elevated. In order to minimize swelling in the early period, gentle cold compresses should be applied 4 to 6 times a day. The nose should be protected from impacts. No smoking should be allowed for 2 weeks after the operation. (Smoking should be stopped in the 1-week period before the operation.) Rhinoplasty can be performed in four seasons; the important thing is to avoid the sun. Precautions should be taken to protect from sun rays during the 6-month period after rhinoplasty. Glasses should not be used until the 3-month period after rhinoplasty is completed. Tough exercises that will increase blood pressure should be avoided for a minimum of 3 weeks. Air travel should not be done for 7-10 days after rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty in Turkey FAQ

If you don't see an answer to your question, you can send us an email from our contact form.

Patients do not need to make any preliminary preparations before rhinoplasty. The morning of the procedure, the hospital performs the blood tests required prior to the operation along with the anesthetic evaluation. But it is always recommended to be in Istanbul a few days before the operation.

Seven days will be sufficient for the healing during the post-consultation phase. After the 24-hour process, if you feel safe, you can spend your time exploring Istanbul's historical and cultural landmarks.

An outpatient rhinoplasty usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours to complete. In "closed rhinoplasty," which has limited flexibility, incisions are done inside the nostrils. The tissue between the nostrils and the nostrils themselves are both cut into during "open rhinoplasty."

A number of various medical treatments are referred to as "nose jobs" in the general sense. The two most common are rhinoplasty, which deals with the outside of the nose and how it looks, and septoplasty, which concentrates on inside abnormalities.

Everyone has a different tolerance for pain, but most patients only feel mild discomfort after surgery. Most patients find feeling "bunged up" to be more disorienting. Your throat and lips may get dry as a result of having to breathe via your mouth for a few days due to the swelling.

The most frequent rhinoplasty side effects that are considered "medical" are severe bleeding or infection. In less than 1 in 500 cases, bleeding necessitates immediate attention and care. Infections following surgery occur about 1%.

Rhinoplasty has some anti-aging effects, particularly for women, despite the fact that most people don't perceive of it as such. In a UCLA study, artificial intelligence estimated that female patients who had rhinoplasty looked up to 3 years younger after the procedure than they did before.

Rhinoplasty can change the shape, size, appearance, projection, or a combination of these things, depending on the demands of the patient. The lips, chin, cheeks, and other facial features are left alone until you receive additional treatments.

Your smile may be impacted by a rhinoplasty; however, this side effect is frequently transient and scarcely noticeable.

A button nose is thought to be the ideal female nose. This kind of nose has a narrower nasal bridge and is raised at the tip. A small, round nose with a form resembling a button is known as a button nose.

It is a common sense that a nose job would make you feel more attractive and self-confident more than usual.

After a rhinoplasty, it's not unusual for your face to appear different. It is truly too early for you to make any judgments regarding your appearance because it has only been a short while since your operation. Before thinking about any revision, wait at least a year after your surgery.
