Prostate Biopsy in Turkey

Empowering Precision, Defending Prostate Health: Together We Biopsy.

What is Prostate Biopsy?

Problems in the prostate are common in men. A prostate biopsy is performed to determine whether a patient has prostate cancer. Prostate biopsy is the process of taking a piece from the prostate through a needle. The prostate tissue taken with the needle is processed and then examined under a microscope and the result is sent to the pathology specialist. The pathologist informs the urologist whether the patient has prostate cancer or not.

Prostate Biopsy Methods

Prostate biopsy is divided into two main groups. These are classical prostate biopsy and fusion prostate biopsy.

- Classical Prostate Biopsy: This type of biopsy has been used for many years and is performed by a urologist. In this technique, an MR examination is not performed before the biopsy. An ultrasound probe is placed in the rectal area of the patient, it shows the front, back, and peripheric zone of the prostate, and twelve random pieces are taken and examined, it is an old method.

- Fusion Prostate Biopsy: This technique is an advanced technique. In this type of biopsy, the patient undergoes multiparametric prostate MRI, and while analyzing the MR scans, areas suspicious for cancer are identified. The patient is then anesthetized, and an ultrasound probe is inserted into the anus. Compared to the classical prostate biopsy, in this technique, ultrasound images and MR images are examined together, and thus, prostate cancer areas that cannot be seen by ultrasound are seen by this method. In other words, instead of taking random pieces, pieces in certain areas are selected and early diagnosis can be made.

During Prostate Biopsy

Prostate biopsy is performed in two ways, but in both methods, an ultrasound probe is inserted through the patient's anus into the large intestine. If the inserted needle also pierces the large intestine and takes a piece from the prostate, this is called a "transrectal prostate biopsy". Twelve samples are taken from various parts of the prostate and the procedure takes about 30 minutes.

The other method is called "transperineal biopsy". In this method, the patient's knees are bent, and he is placed on his side or on his back. The skin is cleaned with a solution, the area around this solution is covered with a sterile cloth and it is important to direct the needle to the right point. The doctor places a finger in the rectum to hold the prostate gland and then the needle is inserted through the perineum into the prostate gland. Tissues are removed, it takes about half an hour.

After Prostate Biopsy

A slight pain may be felt, but this is normal, and the pain disappears within a few days. Bleeding may also occur from time to time, but this is a very short-term event, and the bleeding is mild. Patients may not be able to hold their urine, this is also very normal, so they should not hold their urine after the biopsy. It is very normal for patients to feel sluggish, and they should contact the urologist in case of any unusual situation.
