Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Treatment
Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a condition characterised by excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), usually in older people. This excessive accumulation of fluid causes the ventricles in the brain to enlarge abnormally. NPH is typically characterised by a complex of three prominent symptoms, including gait disturbances, urinary incontinence and cognitive decline.
Treatment is usually by a shunt operation, in which a tube (shunt) is inserted from the brain into the abdominal cavity to divert excess CSF into another body cavity. A shunt operation can significantly improve symptoms and provide a marked increase in quality of life for the patient.
